Costa Rica enjoys the longest whale season IN THE WORLD. One more reason to visit Costa Rica!
Whales migrating from both hemispheres arrive to Costa Rica looking for perfect waters to breed and give birth. The best place for whale watching in all of Costa Rica is definitely its Southern Pacific region, around the areas of Osa Peninsula and Drake Bay, where chances of spotting whales while in season is HUMONGOUS! Peak season is from August through the end of November, and are also commonly spotted in March-June.
This exciting excursion takes you to the grounds of Marino Ballena National Park, which takes its name after the Humpback Whales that find refuge in its coastal waters year after year. The allegory of the name also takes after the rock formation found in the national park called "Whale's Tail" as it resembles a whale's tail! Whales travel from both North and South all the way to this park, pay homage to the big Whale Tail, then return to Argentina or Alaska! It is for sure one of the most impressive travels an animal performs in the whole wide world!
Yet don't forget the dolphins!! Large dolphin populations are also common all along the Pacific coast. Bottle nosed dolphins, rough toothed dolphins, pacific spotted dolphins and many more can be seen around the Drake Bay and Osa Peninsula any day. If you're lucky you might find them in the hundreds!! Tails and dorsal fins splashing on the ocean surface make an incredible sighting and the perfect pairing for this Whale Watching and Wild Dolphin expedition!
What's even better about this incredible eco-adventure is that along with your search for whales and wild dolphins, you will have the opportunity to see the 5 stunning beaches that make up this national park. Your knowledgeable guide will take you on a snorkeling expedition at one of the many great spots in the area, like the Tombolo (Whale's Tail) or Ballena Rock, and around the island's coral reef. To finish up, other awesome places will be on your way, like Ventanas Cave and the Coronado River Mouth of Rio Terraba, the longest and largest in volume in Costa Rica, so definitely a MUST SEE!
