Cahuita National Park Nature Walk
Originally protected due to the diversity of rich coral reef, the Cahuita National Park is now well loved for its accessible nature trails and abundant wildlife. In fact, some of the parks trails are even wheelchair accessible. Your Cahuita National Park nature hike is just under a mile and has a duration of about 45 minutes, depending on the amount of wildlife we spot.
With 2,732 acres of protected land and 55,200 acres of protected marine life, Cahuita National Park is home to a huge variety of species both above ground and below. In the marine park, they have identified 30 different species of coral reef and over 120 different species of tropical fish! On land however, the combination of mangroves, swamps, rainforest and creeks are the perfect haven for a huge variety of animals and birds alike. Your guide will help you spot both howler and white-faced monkeys as well as sloths chillin in the trees. Racoons and Coatimundi are also commonly spotted in the trees or running across the path.
Another animal that you may see scurrying across the hiking trail, or across the water is basilisks. You may know them as Jesus lizards as they can literally walk on water. Speaking of lizards and the like, do not stray off the path! Cahuita National Park is also home to a variety of snakes and of course Costa Rica's famous poison dart frogs. Not to worry, your guides will be able to spot them so you can appreciate them at a safe distance. Oh! If you love birds, Cahuita is rich with both forest and water birds. Keep on the lookout for a variety of species including hummingbirds, kingfishers, ibis, herons and even toucans!
