Journey out of the city and up into the clouds — the cloud forest of Costa Rica, that is! Join us on a full-day trip from San Jose to Monteverde and Santa Elena, where the scenery gets greener, the air gets cooler, and you get to experience the cloud forest from two very different perspectives.
First, rise above the forest canopy aboard the Monteverde Aerial Tram at Treetopia Park, taking in sweeping views as you travel through the treetops. Then it's time to get back down into the forest and explore the famous Sky Walk Hanging Bridges, where trails and suspension bridges take you right into the heart of the cloud forest.
Add in a few fun stops along the way, a traditional Costa Rican lunch in Santa Elena, and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife, and you've got one very full day of Monteverde adventure!
Scenic Drive with Unique Roadside Attractions
The drive from San Jose into the mountains of Monteverde is an adventure in itself. As the city fades behind you, the landscape gradually changes from the Central Valley to lush mountain scenery and, eventually, the cool, misty cloud forest.
We'll make a couple of stops along the way to stretch your legs and enjoy some local Costa Rican treasures — because nobody said a road trip had to be all about sitting in the van!
Our first stop is a famous local fruit stand, where you can grab a cup of Costa Rican coffee, freshly picked tropical fruit, delicious local cheeses, or a sweet treat. It's a fun chance to see — and taste — some of the colorful produce Costa Rica is famous for.
Next up is The Monkey House, a local property where White-faced Capuchin Monkeys often stop by to play in the backyard. These curious little characters can sometimes arrive in surprisingly large groups, so keep your cameras ready!
Traditional Costa Rican Lunch in Santa Elena
Once we reach the Monteverde area, we'll head into Santa Elena, the charming mountain village that serves as one of the gateways to the cloud forest.
Here you'll recharge with a traditional Costa Rican-style "casado" lunch, made with fresh local ingredients. A typical casado includes rice, beans, salad, plantains, and your choice of protein — simple, hearty Costa Rican comfort food that hits the spot after a morning on the road.
Monteverde is also famous for its coffee and locally produced cheeses, so you'll get a little taste of the region before heading into the forest. Eat up — the cloud canopy is waiting!
Monteverde Sky Tram at Treetopia Park
After lunch, it's time to experience the Monteverde cloud forest from a completely different perspective. At Treetopia Park, you'll board the Tree Tram, an easy-going aerial cableway that carries you through the cloud forest canopy and toward one of Monteverde's highest points.
This isn't a zipline, so there is no need to strap yourself into a harness or get your adrenaline pumping. Instead, sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride as the forest unfolds around you.
The round-trip Tree Tram journey covers approximately one mile, with the ride itself taking about 20 minutes. At the top, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy an observation tower and a short forest trail while taking in the cool mountain air and beautiful views. On a clear day, you may even get a spectacular look across the surrounding landscape.
Your naturalist guide will help you spot interesting plants, wildlife, and other details you might otherwise miss as you travel through this unique high-elevation ecosystem.
And remember to bring a light jacket. At approximately 5,700 feet above sea level, Monteverde's cloud forest can be wonderfully cool — especially when the clouds roll in!
Cloud Forest Hanging Bridges at Treetopia Park
Once you've experienced the forest from above, it's time to get closer to it.
The Sky Walk Hanging Bridges at Treetopia Park take you into the heart of the cloud forest on a combination of trails and suspension bridges. The route includes six hanging bridges, ranging from approximately 157 to 774 feet in length, with some bridges suspended as high as 164 feet above the forest floor.
Together, the trails and bridges cover approximately 1.7 miles, giving you plenty of time to slow down, look around, and appreciate the incredible ecosystem surrounding you.
This is where having your own naturalist guide really adds to the experience. Your guide will point out fascinating plants and help you keep an eye out for birds, monkeys, insects, and other wildlife hiding among the leaves. The cloud forest is full of tiny details that are easy to miss when you're simply walking through it.
And yes, there are bugs. It's a cloud forest. They live here. Fortunately, most of them are much more interested in doing their own thing than bothering you.
Keep your eyes open and your camera ready. If the clouds decide to take a little break and the sun makes an appearance, you may also be rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and forest.
