The Tenorio National Park is home to the Tenorio Volcano of course, but it is also home to one of Costa Rica´s 7 Natural wonders, Rio Celeste. Let our naturalist guides lead you through primary forest to discover the marvels of this region on our Rio Celeste & Tenorio Volcano National Park Hike and learn the secrets behind this breathtaking natural phenomena.
Not for those faint of heart, our journey begins early in the morning so we can get started on the 5 mile hike ahead of the rest of the crowds. Be prepared to get wet and muddy as the terrain can be a bit challenging at times. We will stop first to visit "Los Teñideros" or the "dye pools" where it appears that he water is actually being dyed on the spot then running down the river. Here you can really appreciate the natural color of the water in contrast to the sky blue waters in the later pools of Rio Celeste. Of course the highlight of the day culminates at the Rio Celeste Waterfall with its stunning cascades into the mystical blue lagoon.
Costa Rican lore states the Rio Celeste got that impossible blue hue after God painted the sky and cleaned his brushes in her cool rushing waters. In actuality, the Rio Celeste is the convergence of two different rivers which chemically react to create the picture perfect flow of blue that makes this river so special. On our guided tour of these sacred grounds, we´ll have a chance to learn more about how the color of the river comes to be, and the importance of the Tenorio volcano to the surrounding area.
On our hike through the Tenorio National Park our guide will seek out sloths, monkeys, a host of different bird species, croaking frogs and beautiful butterflies who call the banks of the Rio Celeste their home. Before ending our time together, we´ll hit the volcanic hot springs formed from the Tenorio Volcano to experience the relaxation that only a long hike through the woods coupled with a warm bath provided by Mother Nature can provide.
A natural wonder, good exercise, and deep relaxation all in one day? Your perfect day in Costa Rica! Don´t delay, book your Rio Celeste & Tenorio National Park tour today!
