How Does the Van Boat Van Lake Crossing Work?

It really is as simple as the name suggests. Easy as 1,2,3!

Step 1 - Hotel Pickup

We'll pick you up directly from your hotel in a comfortable air-conditioned van and take you to the shores of beautiful Lake Arenal.

Step 2 - Boat Transfer Between Arenal & Monteverde

Board our spacious passenger ferry and enjoy a relaxing cruise across Costa Rica's largest lake. Along the way you'll be treated to incredible views of Arenal Volcano, rolling mountains, lush forests, and if you're lucky, plenty of wildlife. Keep your camera handy—this is one of the most photogenic transfers in Costa Rica.

Step 3 - Hotel Drop Off

When you arrive on the opposite shore, your next shuttle will already be waiting to continue your journey to your hotel in Monteverde or La Fortuna.

The entire journey takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, while avoiding the long drive around the lake and many of the winding roads that can leave travelers feeling a little queasy.

Today, Van Boat Van remains one of the most iconic ways to travel between two of Costa Rica's most popular destinations.

Because departures have limited seating, we recommend reserving your space well in advance.

La Fortuna to Monteverde Lake Crossing Shuttle Includes:

* Hotel pickup and drop-off from designated hotels

Departures: Twice daily at 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. Afternoon shuttles require a minimum of 4 pax to operate. Pickup times start up to one hour prior to departure. Exact meeting instructions will be provided on your confirmation voucher.

Length: Approximately 3+ hours.

La Fortuna to Monteverde Lake Crossing Shuttle Recommendations:

* Comfortable clothing and walking shoes
* Light jacket or rain poncho (weather can change quickly)
* Camera or fully charged phone
* Cash for any remaining balance, snacks, or gratuities
* One large suitcase and one carry-on per passenger

Children: There is not a minimum age and children pay the same price as an adult.

Restrictions: Sorry the public lake crossing is not recommended for those with disabilities. Depending your limitations and the equipment you are carrying with you, we may be able to accommodate you on a private service.

Insider Tip: This is one of our favorite ways to travel between La Fortuna and Monteverde because the journey becomes part of the adventure. Rather than spending hours driving around Lake Arenal, you'll glide across it while taking in incredible volcano views that many visitors never get to experience. During the dry season (December through April), the lake is typically calm and offers excellent visibility. If you're traveling during Costa Rica's green season, don't worry—we'll keep your luggage dry, but we do recommend bringing a light rain jacket or poncho since lake conditions can occasionally be a little splashy.

There are additional fees for those staying in Arenal Observatory & El Castillo in Arenal as well as Vista Verde Lodge & Eco Lodge San Luis in Monteverde.
