Journey to Tenorio Volcano National Park

The adventure begins with a scenic drive through Costa Rica's beautiful northern plains as we leave the Arenal region behind and make our way toward Tenorio Volcano National Park. Along the route, your guide will share stories about the surrounding volcanoes, local communities, agriculture, and the incredible biodiversity that makes this area one of the most ecologically important regions in the country.

As we travel through rolling countryside, tropical forests, and rural villages, keep your eyes open for wildlife and enjoy spectacular views of the landscapes surrounding both Arenal and Tenorio Volcanoes. We'll also make a short stop along the way to stretch our legs, use the restrooms, and grab a coffee or snack before continuing to the park.

Hiking Rio Celeste

Once inside Tenorio Volcano National Park, we'll spend approximately 2.5 to 3 hours exploring one of Costa Rica's most extraordinary hiking trails. The moderate 6.5 km (4 mile) round-trip hike winds through lush rainforest where your guide will help you spot colorful birds, monkeys, tropical plants, and other wildlife that often hide among the trees.

The trail leads to several of the park's most famous highlights, including the breathtaking Rio Celeste Waterfall, bubbling volcanic hot springs, and the legendary Los Teñideros—the magical point where two crystal-clear streams merge and, through a fascinating natural chemical reaction, create the river's famous sky-blue color. Scientists explain the phenomenon as the result of tiny mineral particles reflecting sunlight, but standing there in person, it still feels like pure magic.
